The Valentine Song
by Victor Salazar
Enrique Aragon, or Rick to his family and friends, is a simple young man from a humble background. Since he couldnít afford college, he decides to enlist in the US Navy, and thatís when he meets Margaret Louise Van Buren, or Maggie, as he fondly calls her. A daughter of a retired submarine captain and a university professor, Maggie is from a well-to-do family. She and Rick are worlds apart in their backgrounds, but in each other they found true love. Yet the circumstances of the time conspire to keep them apart, as the United States is at war with Vietnam. Rick is called to serve overseas, and Maggieís own experience with her fatherís absence, being at sea most of the time, while growing up confuses her mind that she winds up thinking Rick will be the same as her fatherís absenteeism. And with this, as words go unspoken or misspoken between them, a misunderstanding to be sure, they part ways. Will they find the way back to each other again?
