by Beate Harttung

When she left the United States for Saudi Arabia in 1994, Beate Harttung had no idea she would fall in love with this country’s beautiful deserts, its intriguing people, and its mysterious customs. Following her husband in his dentistry teaching career, she finds her own niche among the people of Saudi Arabia, teaching languages to royalty, attending lavish parties, and losing herself in the shopping experiences of the Kingdom. Though she struggles with unfamiliar gender roles, strict travel conditions, and sometimes even terrorist threats, Harttung develops a genuine affection for Saudi Arabia.

Her book, in its efforts to dispel popular Western ideas about the Kingdom, provides a rich history, an in-depth travel account, and a love of a country that will transport the reader to a world mixing restriction and freedom, Western interest and Eastern heritage, and traditional beliefs and modern practices.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in Luebeck, Germany, Beate Harttung spent her early childhood years in Austria during World War II. After her studies at the Sorbonne and Alliance Francaise in Paris, she accepted a position as research assistant and secretary to the German Affairs Office in Paris. Her responsibilities included statistical studies of German casualties and the identification of unknown soldiers buried on French soil during World War II.

Her marriage to an officer in the United States Air Force afforded Beate numerous opportunities to teach German and French at the university level, including Furman University, the University of Dayton, and the University of Maryland. Beate has resided with her husband in Washington, D.C., since 1977, where she taught military personnel from the Pentagon and Fort Belvoir and served as a foreign translator for NATO conferences.

For seven years, Beate traveled in the Kingdom and taught for the University of Maryland, Overseas Division, and privately instructed students of various backgrounds, including members of the royal family.

During her seven years in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Beate kept a weekly journal recounting her observations of daily life, which she shared in the form of letters to friends and family. After her return to the United States, the detailed letters were professionally edited into manuscript form. The ensuing book provides intriguing, humorous, and thought-provoking details of everyday life in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a world that Westerners may seldom experience.
