While the sacrifices of soldiers who go to war are well known, do we ever stop to think about the needs and thoughts of the children they leave behind? Tracy Ann Karesh has done so, touchingly, in Brave Little Soldier.

Told from the viewpoint of a child who wants to fight for his country, we first empathize with what it is like to see a son or daughter go off to war. When the author reveals this as a fantasy, she pulls us brilliantly into another theme: What do the children sacrifice, with no parent to take walks with or to hug at night? Their bravery, too, needs to be recognized; their perseverance needs to be rewarded.

Read this illustrated book with a child you love. Imagine what it would be like to have each other. Then the sacrifices of our military families will be very clear.
