Chuck Alexander’s son, Shock, is an eighth grader who isn’t particularly fond of school or homework. Sometimes he doesn’t complete his homework, and at other times, he finishes it but doesn’t bother to turn it in. “Hey, kids need time to play!” Shock professes. His father lectures him on the importance of getting a good education. As it turns out Shock isn’t lazy. There are many social issues impacting his grades at school.
Alexander takes his son—and the reader—through the many difficulties of young adulthood: waking up on time, getting good grades, handling being different from other kids, dressing appropriately, honesty, exercise, dealing with bullies, being prepared, and using good judgment. Parents of children going through similar problems will take note of the teaching story at the end of each lesson. In the cautionary fictional part of the book, Alexander speculates on the future of a child who does not learn to be a responsible adult.
